CARY, N.C. -- Four of the Demon Deacons' five players shot at or under par in the final round of play as the Wake Forest men's golf team captured the team title at The Intercollegiate at MacGregor Downs on Saturday afternoon. The event was contested on the 6,776-yard, par-72 course at the MacGregor Downs Country Club in Cary.

The Deacs stood in fourth place heading into the final round of play, five strokes behind leader NC State. But Wake recorded the lowest team round of the tournament on the final 18 holes, a 9-under 279, to finish at even par and win the event by four strokes over the Wolfpack. The team title is the first for the Deacs this spring and the second of the 1999-2000 school year.

Four of the five Deacons finished in the top 20, with freshman BRENT WANNER leading the way. Wanner shot a career-low 67 in the final round to surge from 18th place to 3rd place, finishing 2-under par (214). He was five strokes behind the individual medalist, East Tennessee State's Chris Wisler.

Sophomore JAY MORGAN and freshman CHAD WILFONG both shot 2-under 70's on the final 18 to finish tied for 15th place at 3-over par. Freshman CHRIS YODER fired a 72 and tied for 20th at 5-over, while freshman BUCK WILLIAMS, who stood in seventh place heading into the final round, carded a 79 and tied for 29th at 7-over.

The Deacs are back in action next weekend at the ACC Championships, held April 21-23 at the Old North State Club at Uwharrie Point, N.C.
