The Wake Forest men's golf team, ranked 18th nationally, is currently in second place by one stroke after two rounds of The Intercollegiate,
held at the par 72, 7,027-yard Finley Golf Course. The Demon Deacons completed Saturday's 36 holes with an eight-under par 568, just one stroke back of first-place
NC State. The state's "Big Four" schools hold the top four spots among the 12 participating teams, as Duke and North Carolina are tied for third, one stroke back of
Wake Forest.
Wake Forest freshman Bill Haas (Greer, S.C.), is currently in a three-way tie for second place individually with a five-under par 139. Haas turned in rounds of 69 and
70 in Saturday's action to finish the day just four strokes behind field leader David Sanchez of NC State. Another Deacon is listed among the top five individuals, as
sophomore Brent Wanner (Chatham, Mass.) is tied for fifth with a four-under 140. Wanner turned in a pair of 70s to finish the day one stroke back of teammate Haas.
All five Deacon competitors finished the day among the top 35, as a pair of sophomores, Cortland Lowe (Augusta, Ga.) and Buck Williams (Raleigh, N.C.) are tied for
25th with a two-over 146. Both posted identical scores of 72-74 on Saturday's rounds. Junior Jay Morgan (Choctaw, Okla.) is tied for 35th with a four-over 148.
Morgan rebounded from a first-round 77 to card a one-under 71 on the second 18.
Wake Forest, team champion of The 2000 Intercollegiate, will look to successfully defend its title on Sunday. Final round action begins at 8:00 a.m. Fans can follow
