CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -
The Wake Forest men's golf team finds itself in second place by one stroke after 36 holes of The Intercollegiate,
taking place at the par 72, 7,057-yard Finley Golf Course at UNC. The 54-hole tournament began on Saturday with the first two rounds. Twelve
teams, including four ACC squads, are competing in the event.
Wake Forest shot a field-low 274 as a team in Saturday's opening round, as three Demon Deacons posted scores in the 60s. The Tar Heels,
however, responded with a 273 in the second round to overtake the top team spot on the leaderboard. Wake Forest finished the day with a
17-under 559, one stroke back of UNC. Minnesota is one stroke behind Wake in third place, while NC State is fourth at 15-under par. Ten of
the 12 teams finished the day even or under par.
Wake Forest sophomore Bill Haas (Greer, S.C.) tied his season-low by carding a 65 in the first round. He followed that up with a 69 on the
second 18 to finish the day tied for first place at 10-under 134. He's currently sharing the lead with Vanderbilt's Brandt Snedeker, who posted
scores of 66 and 68. The duo is two strokes ahead of the next competitor, Ramon Bescansa of UNC, who turned in a low score of 64 in the
second round and is eight-under in third place.
Wake senior Jay Morgan (Choctaw, Okla.) and junior Chad Wilfong (Thomasville, N.C.) are currently tied for 11th with a four-under 140.
Morgan turned in a season-low 68 in the first round, then followed it up with an even 72. Wilfong tied his career-best 67 in the first round, then
turned in a 73.
Junior Brent Wanner (Chatham, Mass.) is tied for 34th with a one-over 145, after posting rounds of 74 and 71. Senior Bart DeLuca (Baltimore,
Md.) seeing his first action of the season, turned in scores of 74 and 81 and is tied for 65th at 11-over par (155).
Two Demon Deacons are competing in the tournament as individuals. Junior Cortland Lowe (Augusta, Ga.) is 59th with an eight-over 152
(74-78), while Buck Williams (Raleigh, N.C.) is 65th with a 155 (77-78).
The final round of The Intercollegiate takes place Sunday.
