Deacons Cruise To Team Title At Hootie Intercollegiate

March 28, 2006

AWANDAW, SC -  Three Wake Forest golfers finished in the top 10, including a second-place finish by sophomore Webb Simpson, as the Demon Deacons rolled to the team championship at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate here Tuesday.

The 19th-ranked Deacons led the 54-hole event from start to finish at the par 71, 7,229-yard Bulls Bay Golf Club. Wake Forest finished the tournament 10-under par and an impressive 16 shots in front of both UCF and co-host South Carolina. Augusta State finished fourth, 18 strokes back, and North Carolina was fifth, 24 strokes out.

The victory was Wake Forest's second of the 2005-06 season - the first time since 2002-03 that the Deacons have won two events in the same season. Wake Forest won the Mattaponi Springs Shootout in the fall.

Simpson came within one shot of earning his first collegiate individual title. The Deacon sophomore shot a 1-over 72 today, finishing 8-under for the tournament and one stroke behind medalist Jamie Miller of Augusta State. Only one other player, UCF's Sonny Nimkuhm (-1), finished under par for the tournament.

Deacon senior Kyle Reifers finished strong, shooting a 2-under 69 today. He finished 1-over for the tournament and tied for sixth place. Senior Doug Manchester, despite shooting a 6-over 77 today, earned his first career top-10 finish by taking ninth place.

Sophomore Chris McCartin finished the tournament 5-over par and tied for 22nd place. Junior Sean Moore tied for 33rd place at 7-over.

Wake Forest will wrap up the regular season April 10-11 at the U.S. Collegiate Championships in Alpharetta, GA.
