Aiken, S.C. -
The Wake Forest men's golf team won the Cleveland Golf Collegiate Championship, held at the par 71,
6,380-yard Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, S.C. The Deacons led the 15-team after two rounds on Monday, and cold, rainy and
windy weather forced the cancellation of Tuesday's final round. Wake Forest was declared the tournament winner, finishing
six strokes ahead of second-place Augusta State.
The Demon Deacons, sporting a lineup of four sophomores and one freshman, shot a field-leading nine-over par in Monday's
first round, then scored an even-par 284 in the second round. The tournament featured three other teams ranked among the
nation's top 35 in the Mastercard rankings, and the 25th-ranked Deacons won over two higher-ranked squads, No. 18 Augusta
State and No. 11 Virginia Tech.
Three Deacons finished among the top ten on the individual leaderboard. Sophomore Cortland Lowe (Augusta, Ga.) placed
fifth with a one-over 143 (71-72). Sophomore Brent Wanner (Chatham, Mass.) finished one stroke back of his teammate in
sixth with a two-over 144. Freshman Bill Haas (Greer, S.C.) tied for ninth place with a four-over 146. After shooting a 78 in
the first round, Haas rebounded on the second 18, firing a 68, one of only five rounds in the 60s for the tournament.
Sophomore Chad Wilfong (Thomasville, N.C.) finished in 21st place with a seven-over 149 (72-77), while sophomore Chris
Yoder (Ashland, Ohio), placed 29th with a nine-over 151 (79-72).
Wake Forest has finished in second and first place in its last two outings. The Deacons return to action on March 31-April 1,
when they compete in the Cleveland Golf/Augusta State Invitational in Augusta, Ga.
