The Wake Forest men's golf team is currently in first place out of 15 teams after playing two rounds of the Cleveland Golf Collegiate Championship, held at the par 71, 6,380-yard Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, S.C.
The Demon Deacons, sporting a lineup of four sophomores and one freshman, shot a field-leading nine-over par in Monday's first round, then scored an even-par 284 in the second round. Wake holds a six-stroke lead over second-place Augusta State heading into Tuesday's final round.
Three Deacons are among the top ten on the leaderboard after 36 holes of play. Sophomore Cortland Lowe (Augusta, Ga.) is in fifth place with a one-over 143 (71-72). Sophomore Brent Wanner (Chatham, Mass.) is one stroke back of his teammate in sixth place with a two-over 144. Freshman Bill Haas (Greer, S.C.) is currently tied for ninth place with a four-over 146. After shooting a 78 in the first round, Haas rebounded on the second 18, firing a 68, one of only five rounds in the 60s all day.
Sophomore Chad Wilfong (Thomasville, N.C.) is currently in second place with a seven-over 149 (72-77), while sophomore Chris Yoder (Ashland, Ohio), is in ninth with a nine-over 151 (79-72).
The final round of the Cleveland Golf Collegiate Championship takes place Tuesday.
