HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. - Freshman BRENT WANNER finished in a tie for second place as the Wake Forest men's golf team tied for fifth out of 18 teams at the Birkdale Collegiate Classic this past weekend. The event was contested on the par-72, 7013-yard Birkdale Golf Club.

The Demon Deacons carded team rounds of 303, 293 and 301 for a 54-hole score of 897, or 33-over par. The Deacs finished 24 strokes back of team champion VCU, who shot a 9-over 873, and tied for fifth place with Virginia Tech.

Wanner turned in the best performance of his young career, shooting 72-71 on Saturday and closing with a career-low 69 on Sunday for a 54-hole total of 212. Other Deacons competing at the event included freshman CHAD WILFONG, who shot 77-77-72=226 to tie for 30th place and sophomore JAY MORGAN, who tied for 33rd place (77-71-79=227). Junior RYAN PEIFFER placed 61st in his first event of the 1999-2000 season (77-76-81=234)., while freshman BUCK WILLIAMS rounded out the Deacon field at 79th place, carding a 240 (84-75-81).

The Demon Deacons are next in action at the Cleveland Golf Collegiate Championship in Aiken, S.C., on March 20-21.
