LAS VEGAS, Nev. -  Wake Forest struggled on the final 18 holes of the Southern Highlands Collegiate Championship here Sunday and finished 14^th out of 15 teams.

 

The 14^th-ranked Demon Deacons shot a cumulative 316, 28-over par today. The highly-competitive field, which included 13 nationally-ranked teams, was tightly bunched. Wake Forest finished within 10 shots of Texas, New Mexico and Washington.

 

The 54-hole event was played at the Southern Highlands Golf Club.

 

Tournament host UNLV fired a cumulative 2-over 290 today to win the championship by 10 strokes over No. 1-ranked and defending NCAA champion Georgia. Oklahoma State finished third, followed by Florida.

 

UNLV also took first place in the individual race as Matt Kinsinger finished 2-under par to win medalist honors. Kinsinger's Rebel teammate, Seung-su Han, and Oklahoma State's Pablo Martin finished tied for second place, three strokes back.

 

Wake Forest got off to a slow start in the tournament and could not muster any momentum. Wake's top finisher was senior Doug Manchester, who finished the 54-hole event 15-over par and tied for 36^th place. Sophomore Webb Simpson finished 53^rd at 17-over. Senior Kyle Reifers shot an 81 today and finished 18-over par. Junior Sean Moore finished 21-over par and sophomore Chad Wilcox 26-over.

 

The Deacons get back into action Friday-Sunday at the Texas/GCAA Hall of Fame Invitational in Houston (TX). The 54-hole tournament will be played at the Redstone Golf Club.
