Huntersville, NC -
The 11th-ranked Wake Forest men's golf team posted its best finish of the season thus far, finishing second at the Birkdale Collegiate Classic at Birkdale Golf Club in Huntersville, N.C. After the 15 competing teams played two rounds in cold, windy conditions on the par 72, 7,013-yard course Monday, the final 18 holes scheduled for Tuesday was cancelled due to the inclement weather.
The second-place Deacons finished with a 36-hole total of two-over 578, just five strokes back of team champion East Tennessee State. For the second straight event, freshman Bill Haas (Greer, S.C.) led the way for Wake Forest, posting a career-best second place finish. Haas posted two rounds of 71 to finish with a two-under 142, just one stroke back of individual medalist Pat Beste of ETSU.
Wake Forest placed two other competitors in the top ten, as sophomore Brent Wanner (Chatham, Mass.) finished third, just one stroke behind Haas with a 143 (72-71). Another Deacon sophomore, Chris Yoder (Ashland, Ohio), tied for sixth with a two-over 146 (72-74). Sophomore Chad Wilfong (Thomasville, N.C.) posted a top 20 finish, placing in a tie for 14th with a four-over 148 (71-77).
Wake Forest's next stop on the spring tournament schedule is the USC Aiken/Cleveland Golf Collegiate, held in Aiken, S.C. on March 19-20.
