Wake Forest No. 2 In Director's Cup Standings

Dec. 22, 2002

Stanford University, an eight-time champion, and Wake Forest University, top the NACDA Directors' Cup Division I fall standings.

Stanford has scored in four of the five sports completed thus far, taking the national title in men's cross country. The Cardinal also placed second in women's cross country and men's soccer and fifth in women's soccer, to record 353 points.

Just 76 points behind is Wake Forest, with 277 points, based on its national title in field hockey, ninth place showings in women's cross country and men's soccer and a 17th place finish in women's soccer. They are followed by Penn State, in third with 269 points; Notre Dame, fourth, 229 points; and Michigan, in fifth with 209 points.

These standings are based upon the completion of women and men's cross country, field hockey and women and men's soccer. In addition to Stanford and Wake Forest, winning national championships were Brigham Young in women's cross country; Portland (Ore.) in women's soccer; and UCLA in men's soccer.

The NACDA Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports -- 10 women's and 10 men's. Each national champion receives 100 points.

Fall sports standings to date follows. Please note, standings published midseason are unofficial standings. Official standings will be published upon the completion of the spring season.
