Former Football Player Commits $2.3 Million To Deacon Tower

April 10, 2007

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Former Wake Forest football player Bob McCreary has committed $2,300,000 to the school's athletic department, accelerating fund-raising efforts for the new Deacon Tower.

In recognition of a $2 million outright gift for Deacon Tower, the athletic department will name the main plaza area, the Bob McCreary Plaza. The plaza will serve as the front door for the athletic program for generations to come.

In addition to his $2 million commitment, McCreary will continue his membership in the Moricle Society, the highest giving level in the Deacon Club. He has committed for 10 premium seats in the new Deacon Tower, pushing his total commitment to $2.3 million.

McCreary graduated in 1963 and was tackle on the football team.

"Bob has always been a loyal supporter of our program," Wake Forest athletic director Ron Wellman said. "He desires excellence and has made numerous commitments in the past that have given us that opportunity. As a former football player, he is extremely excited about our future and his generous pledge reflects that enthusiasm."

McCreary's loyal support has shown leadership and inspiration for former Wake Forest football players and donors at large. In 2001, he was the lone member of the Moricle Society (currently $55,000 per year). With his inspiration, that group has grown to 21 members over the last four years.

"Bob McCreary's early commitment for 10 premium seats helped provide momentum for Deacon Tower, which is currently sold out. The $2 million outright gift provides a major boost to the outright gift fund-raising efforts in support of the overall renovation of the stadium," said Barry Faircloth, associate athletic director.

McCreary's commitment is an example of the importance of support in two key revenue streams - premium seats and outright gifts - that are necessary to support the successful renovation of Groves Stadium. In addition to his gifts, McCreary has participated each year in major football group ticket-sales programs for the employees of his company, McCreary Modern, in Newton (N.C.).

"The scholarship that was provided to me and the education I received enabled me to excel in business and life," McCreary said. "It is an honor and a privilege to give back to the University that gave much to me."
