Recap |  Box Score

  • Senior Da'Vaughn Mellerson, playing at left tackle, recorded his first career start against the Tar Heels.

  • The 43-yard pass from C.J. Leak to Fabian Davis in the first quarter was a career-long for both players (Leak ö passing, Davis ö receiving).

  • Sophomore defensive end Roderick Stephen recorded his first career sack in the first quarter.

  • Offensive tackle Tyson Clabo, a true freshman, saw his first collegiate action in the second quarter.

  • Bryan Ray's fumble recovery in the endzone for a touchdown produced two career firsts for the senior defensive end ö first recovered fumble and first points. Ray caused three fumbles in 1999 and one in 1998.

  • Ray's TD was Wake Forest's first defensive touchdown since September 26, 1998, when former Deac Mark Makovec had a 38-yard interception return for a touchdown at Clemson. Wake Forest won that game, 29-19. It was the first fumble recovery touchdown for the Deacs since 1992, when George Coghill recovered a fumble and went 83 yards against Vanderbilt (October 10).

  • North Carolina, who also recovered a Wake Forest fumble and scored a touchdown in the third quarter, is the first opponent to do that against the Deacs since November 21, 1998, when Georgia Tech's Kofi Smith recovered a fumble and went 90 yards for a TD.

  • The Tar Heels took another record away from Georgia Tech , as their 78-yard punt return for a touchdown in the fourth quarter was the first against the Deacs since the Yellow Jackets' Charlie Rogers ran back a punt 63 yards for a TD, also in that November 21, 1998 game.

  • UNC's punt return touchdown spoiled a career-long boot for punter Matt Brennie. The 56-yarder against the Tar Heels surpassed his previous career long of 55 yards, set last week against Appalachian State. Brennie punted 11 times (two shy of the school record) for 512 yards against UNC, for a career-best 46.5 average.

  • Tonight's attendance of 30,087 is the largest Groves Stadium in exactly 11 years. On September 9, 1989, a crowd of 30,200 saw the Deacs fall to Appalachian State, 10-15.

  • Quarterback C.J Leak recorded career highs in passing attempts (34), completions (14) and yardage (164).

  • The Deacs get off to an 0-2 start for the first time since the 1995 season.
