Wake Forest Football Notes
Aug. 31, 2000
Recap |
Box Score
Tyler Ashe's 50-yard field goal on Wake Forest first drive of the game
was a career long and tied the sixth-longest field goal in Wake Forest
history. His previous long was a 46-yarder last season against UAB.
Of the seven field goals in Wake Forest's history that have been 50
yards or longer, four have come against Appalachian State - 53 yards
(Wade Tollison, 1990 and Matthew Burdick, 1998), 51 yards (Wade
Tollison, 1992) and 50 yards (Tyler Ashe, 2000).
Nathan Bolling's fumble recovery for the Demon Deacons in the first
quarter was the third of his career. He had two as a freshman in 1998.
Eleven Deacs made their first career start against App State -- six on
offense, five on defense. First-time starters on offense include Ray
Thomas (TE), Chris Blank (LT), Tim Bennett (RG), Ira Williams (WR) and
C.J. Leak (QB). First-time defensive starters included Montique Sharpe
(DT), Michael Clinkscale (SS), Chris Justice (CB), Nick Bender (LB) and
Calvin Pace (DE).
John Stone's 88-yard kickoff return at the end of the first quarter
was the second of his career, and not even the longest - he had a
99-yard return for a TD against Duke last season. Tonight's return
was the eighth-longest return (including punt, kickoff and interception
returns) in school history. It was also Stone's third career touchdown
- he reached the endzone in last year's season opener against Army on a
15-yard reverse.
Defensive Firsts: Junior cornerback Chris Justice made his first
career start a memorable one - he recorded an interception in the second
quarter, also a career first. Linebacker Ed Kargbookorogie also
recorded his first career interception when he picked off a pass in the
fourth quarter. Tackle Masanori Toguchi, playing his first career game
on the defensive side of the ball, recovered a fumble in the fourth
quarter.
Offensive Firsts: Junior fullback Rhamen Love-Lane recorded his first
career catch ( )and sophomore running back Jamie Scott recorded his
first career TD on a one-yard run. Both occurred on Wake Forest's final
drive of the game.
Tonight's attendance of 26,853 is the largest Groves Stadium crowd
since the Deacs played Appalachian State in front of 26,885 fans two
seasons ago (10/3/98).
Punter Matt Brennie booted a 55-yard punt in the third quarter - a
career long for the sophomore. His previous long was 51 yards against
Rutgers last season.
Two true freshmen saw their first collegiate action tonight - running
back Fred Staton and defensive back Quintin Williams. Williams registered three tackles.
