Whether it's on the football field or in the classroom, this veteran Deacon gives a great effort and has already enjoyed a productive career … now enters his senior season with high expectations for a fitting finale to a very profitable Wake Forest experience … only real drawback thus far was the injury he suffered last fall, cutting short what could have been an outstanding junior year … sustained a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his right knee early in Wake's win at Clemson and missed the remainder of the schedule … had compiled nine tackles in the first two contests of '98, including four solo stops at Air Force and five hits (2 solo) in the victory over Navy … did not participate in spring drills but all indications are that he will be ready for full contact in August … coaching staff is looking forward to his return and the leadership he displays at that position … a tough, hard-nosed competitor with a great work ethic … not an extremely vocal player, but one who leads by example … also a great example as a student with Dean's List credentials in both semesters last year … spent one year as a redshirt (1995), but has lettered each season since … will be a strong contender for a starting tackle spot and should definitely be a factor in the interior of the Deacon defense in 1999.

1997: Saw significant action in all 11 games and was the top tackler among all defensive linemen … started five of the last six games … began the season a little slowly, but began to assert himself after the first three weeks … started for the first time against NC State and contributed six tackles … matched that number of stops three times later in the year versus North Carolina, Clemson and Rutgers … finest single game outings included Duke (5 tackles, sack, TFL) and Rutgers (6 tackles, sack, 2 TFLs) … spread his four quarterback sacks among four different contests … finished tied for the team-lead in TFLs with nine (for 42 yards in losses) and was tied for second in sacks (4).

1996: Played in all 11 games, even starting on one occasion (at Clemson) in place of Fred Robbins … on the field for 45 plays that day, a busy outing that rates only behind a 50-play afternoon at Maryland in terms of activity … totaled five tackles in each of those contests … came up with two fumble recoveries -- one set up a field goal in win over App State, the other stopped a Duke drive deep in Wake territory in that victory … two sacks came versus North Carolina and Florida State.

BACKGROUND: Product of the traditionally strong program at Farmville Central High … selected to both the Shrine Bowl and East-West all-star contests … also the leading vote-getter among defensive linemen in all-state polling, being named on 16 of 18 ballots … started for the first time as a freshman at Farmville and went on to earn four varsity letters and total 259 tackles for his career … 71 of those hits went for negative yardage … coached as a prep player by Dixon Sauls … three times an all-conference pick and twice named all-East by the Raleigh News & Observer … equally impressive in the classroom, being named to the National Honor Society while also honored by his classmates who voted him senior class president … active in WFU outreach program and received one of six "Balance" awards for his contributions in that area last spring … majoring in sociology … older brother David played football at North Carolina Central … age 22 (born 3/8/77).
