Experienced member of the Demon Deacon offensive line who could make a major contribution in a variety of ways during the 1999 season … a high school quarterback -- his friends may not recognize him now with an added 70 pounds-or-so since he first enrolled at WFU -- he has played tight end, guard and tackle on the Deac offensive unit during his career which has seen him letter the past two years in two different positions … now seems to be entrenched at tackle, although his versatility is such that the coaching staff is confident in his abilities on either side of center (short or long) … could also see some duty at his old spot at tight end in certain situations this fall … as noted, has worked extremely hard to add strength and bulk to his frame since his freshman year … benchpresses 435 lbs to rank fifth on team in that exercise … moves very well and has not lost any speed or quickness with the added weight … spent his first year (1995) on campus as a redshirt, then saw only brief bits of action the following season … lettered for the first time in 1997, working on special teams and as a backup guard … switched to tackle in spring of '98 … now hopes to continue his development and be a significant factor in his final year.
1998: Saw a good deal of action during the first half of the season, starting at a tackle spot in five of the year's first six outings … played most of the Air Force and Navy games with youngster Michael Collins seeing brief time late in each contest … slowed by a hamstring injury in late-September and missed the App State game entirely … then returned to the lineup against both Duke and Maryland before being replaced by Collins late in the schedule.
BACKGROUND: Successful in football, basketball and in the classroom at Spotswood High … listed as one of the top 25 players in Virginia (Roanoke Times) as a senior there where he played for coach Joe Taylor … standout quarterback for the Trailblazers, breaking numerous school passing records … threw for more than 2,600 yards and 25 touchdowns during his junior and senior years … led team to state playoffs and an 8-3 record in 1994 … lettered as a sophomore, junior and senior … outstanding basketball player at Spotswood, too, helping his team to the 1993 state AA championship … averaged 23 points and 15 rebounds per game as a senior in earning all-state (2nd team) honors … the top scorer and rebounder in school history … also a very productive student, gaining National Honor Society membership … a Deans List student majoring in communication at WFU … spent part of his 1998 summer working as a stage assistant (grip) in the filming of a movie in nearby High Point … age 22 (born 4/20/77).
