Wake Forest has granted men's basketball player Dshamal Schoetz permission to contact other schools, beginning the process for him to transfer to another institution.

Schoetz (pronounced ja-mall shetz) has indicated he will transfer to a Division II or a Division III school, where he would be eligible for the 2003-04 season. A junior academically, Schoetz will have two years of eligibility remaining.

"Dshamal has been a contributor on two NCAA Tournament teams," head coach Skip Prosser said. "He is doing well academically. He is seeking an opportunity for more playing time. I understand that, and I wish him the best."

Schoetz, a native of Cottbus, Germany, played two seasons on the high school level at High Point Wesleyan Academy before enrolling at Wake Forest. He redshirted the 2000-01 season under then-coach Dave Odom. Prior to the start of the 2001-02 season, Schoetz suffered a season-ending knee injury. He worked hard to rehabilitate the knee and saw his first collegiate action in 2002-03.

Schoetz played in six games in 2002-03, averaging 1.3 points and 0.8 rebounds per game. He made 3-of-10 field goal attempts and 2-of-4 free throw attempts.

"I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Wake Forest," Schoetz said. "I feel like I made great progress as a person and as a basketball player. I personally want to express my gratitude to Coach Prosser and athletic director Ron Wellman for giving me the opportunity to attend Wake Forest. I will miss my teammates and coaches considerably, but I feel like I need to move on."
