Wake Forest won a coin toss with Georgia Tech tonight, giving the Deacons the No. 3 seed in the March 11-14 ACC Tournament in Greensboro. The Deacons, 19-8 overall, will play No. 6 seed Maryland Friday night at approximatley 9:20 p.m. in the final quarterfinal game at the Greensboro Colliseum.
The coin toss was administered by ACC Commissioner John Swofford at the league office in Greensboro. The tie-breaking measure was needed after Wake Forest and Georgia Tech tied for third in the final ACC standings. Because the Deacons and Yellow Jackets had identical won-loss records against the other seven ACC schools, the coin toss was required as the final step in the tie-breaking process.
Georgia Tech gets the No. 4 seed and will play No. 5 North Carolina. The other quarterfinal match-ups are No. 1 Duke against the winner of Thursday night's first-round game between No. 8 Virginia and No. 9 Clemson. No. 2 NC State will play No. 7 Florida State.
Wake Forest is seeded third or higher for the third consecutive year. The Deacons were the No. 1 seed in 2003 and were the No. 3 seed in 2002.
The Deacons are attempting to advance to the ACC Tournament championship game for the first time since winning back-to-back ACC titles in 1995 and 1996.
Wake Forest swept the regular season series with Maryland this year, beating the Terrapins 93-85 in Winston-Salem and 91-83 in College Park.
