WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) - Reyshawn Terry had 24 points, Tyler Hansbrough added 17 and No. 23 North Carolina gave Wake Forest its eighth Atlantic Coast Conference loss in a row with an 83-72 victory Sunday.
David Noel finished with 13 points despite foul trouble and Danny Green scored 10 for the Tar Heels (17-6, 8-4), who improved to 5-1 on the road in the ACC. They also assured themselves of at least a .500 record in the conference, often a requirement for an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament.
Terry, a junior playing his hometown, missed his career high by one point. He made half of his 14 shots and all but one of his nine free throws as North Carolina converted 24-of-30 at the line. Hansbrough was coming off a 40-point effort against Georgia Tech, and he quietly reached double figures for the 18th game in a row.
Overall, the Tar Heels have won seven of nine and moved into a tie for third in the ACC with Boston College.
Justin Gray needed 22 shots to get 20 points for the Demon Deacons (13-13, 1-11), and Eric Williams had 15 of his 19 points in the first half.
Gray had two 3-pointers in the final 90 seconds of the first half to help the Deacons take the lead, and they stretched the margin to nine soon after halftime on consecutive 3s from Michael Drum and Gray. That's when the Tar Heels regained control.
They held Wake Forest to a single point over an 8-minute span, and by that time, North Carolina was ahead. A 10-1 run capped by Bobby Frasor's free throw tied it for the final time before Noel stepped outside for a jumper from beyond the arc.
Suddenly, the Tar Heels led, and it only got worse from there for the Deacons. Terry swished a pair of 3-pointers - one coming just before the shot clock expired - and Marcus Ginyard got a steal that led to a layup. When Danny Green added a 3 of his own, the lead was 69-59.
Wake Forest never recovered, and now even the NIT is in question. For the first time since opening the 1998-99 season 1-1, the Deacons are at .500, and they have a trip to No. 13 Boston College and a home game against No. 21 North Carolina State left on the schedule.
