DAVIDSON, N.C. (AP) - Davidson ended its 21-year run of futility against
Wake Forest on Wednesday night as Landry Kosmalski scored six of the Wildcats'
eight points in overtime to lead them to a 54-49 victory.
Kosmalski finished with 17 points as the Wildcats (11-9) broke a 19-game
losing streak against Wake Forest dating to 1979. Stephen Marshall added 22 for
Davidson.
Robert O'Kelley scored 15, but it wasn't enough to prevent the Demon Deacons
(12-9) from losing for the fifth time in six games.
Wake Forest has had problems with its field-goal shooting nearly all season,
and those troubles spilled over to the foul line against Davidson. The Demon
Deacons missed 13 of 23 free throws, including all four in the final 1:41 of
overtime.
Kosmalski hit two free throws to put the Wildcats ahead to stay at 50-49
with 1:57 left, and he added one more at the 41-second mark.
After Wake Forest's Broderick Hicks missed everything from 12 feet on the
right wing, Kosmalski got the rebound and was fouled with 14 seconds remaining.
He made the first and missed the second, but the rebound caromed right back to
him and he was fouled again at the 11-second mark. This time he made both to
account for the final margin.
After Wake Forest missed a pair of 3-point attempts in the closing seconds,
Davidson's fans stormed the floor to celebrate the Wildcats' first victory
against an Atlantic Coast Conference opponent since 1994.
There were eight ties and four lead changes in the second half before the
teams went scoreless over a period of nearly five minutes, missing a combined
11 shots in the process. Darius Songaila finally broke the drought when he hit
a foul shot with 1:21 remaining, putting Wake Forest up 42-41.
That set the stage for a finish that featured three lead changes in the last
63 seconds. Kosmalski banged a 3-point attempt off the back of the rim at the
buzzer with the score tied at 46-all.
