Cape Cod Baseball League Official Press Release

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest baseball coach George Greer will be inducted into the Cape Cod Baseball League Hall of Fame in a ceremony to be held on November 2 in Chatham, Mass. Greer, the 2002 ACC Coach of the Year, is part of a 12-member class of inductees, highlighted by current Boston Red Sox stars Nomar Garciaparra and Jason Varitek, former major league pitcher Ron Darling and former major league manager and current ESPN analyst Buck Showalter.

The Class of 2002 represents the Hall of Fame's third class of inductees and also includes former big league pitcher Paul Mitchell, veteran umpire Curly Clement, CCBL Vice President Dick Sullivan, former administrators Russ Ford and Bernie Kilroy and former player/managers George Karras and Bill Livesey.

"It's a most-cherished honor and something I never expected," Greer said. "To be inducted in the role of player and coach is especially meaningful to me and my family."

This spring, Greer completed his 15th season at Wake Forest. He owns a 562-325-4 record with the Demon Deacons, the fifth-most wins in Atlantic Coast Conference history. In 21 years as a Division I head coach, Greer is 668-447-8. He has led the Demon Deacons to three ACC Championships and five NCAA Tournament appearances.

Greer was a double-threat in the Cape League, performing as a standout Chatham A's player from 1965-67 and returning 12 years later as field manager for the Cotuit Kettleers. The 1969 graduate of the University of Connecticut compiled a .349 batting average and led the league in doubles (10) and triples (4) in 1965 and returned in 1966 with a .368 batting avg. and was second in the league with 43 hits.

Greer left Chatham midway through the 1967 season to captain the Pan American team. He delivered the game-winning hit for Team USA in the bottom of the ninth inning to beat Cuba for the championship. He returned to the Cape that summer and batted .354 down the stretch to help Chatham capture the league title. He was named 1st Team All-America for the Huskies in 1967 and 1968. Greer managed Cotuit from 1979-87, compiling a 213-143-2 (.598) record with three playoff championships and two manager-of-the-year awards.

While at Cotuit, Greer coached future major leaguers Will Clark, John Franco, Greg Vaughn, Joe Girardi, Terry Steinbach and Ron Darling.
