CLEMSON, S.C. - No. 3 Clemson drilled seven home runs and pounded out 25 hits to fly past No. 22 Wake Forest, 26-1, Thursday night at Doug Kingsmore Stadium. The Demon Deacons drop to 33-18 overall and 16-11 in the ACC. With their 13th straight overall victory and 11th in a row in ACC action, the Tigers improve to 41-13 overall and 22-6 in the ACC.
Junior Tyler Colvin and junior Andy D'Alessio each drilled two home runs. Colvin went 5-for-7 with a career-high eight RBI. D'Alessio smacked his ACC leading 19th and 20th home runs. The first baseman went
2-for-3 with three RBI. Stan Widmann went 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
A total of 12 different Tigers had hits. Clemson scored in every inning, but the second.
Junior Stephen Faris (8-2) was almost untouchable. The junior tossed 6.0 shutout innings and faced the minimum. He allowed two hits and punched out four without issuing a walk.
Freshman Brad Kledzik (5-4) was charged with the loss. The right-handed hurler was knocked around for 11 runs, all earned, on 13 hits in 5.0 innings. Kledzik failed to reach the sixth inning for just the third time in nine ACC starts and first time since April 7 against NC State.
The 11 earned runs are the most a Demon Deacon pitcher has surrendered since Kyle Young allowed 12 against Florida State on May 21, 2004.
The 26 runs and 25 hits are the most allowed by Wake Forest since May 21, 2004 when Florida State scored 27 runs on 25 hits. The 25-run margin of defeat is the largest in school history.
The Deacons return to action tomorrow night with the second game of the series with Clemson. First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 pm. Sophomore Eric Niesen will get the start for Wake Forest.
