Final Stats
CORAL GABLES, Fla. -
Miami left-handed pitcher Scott Maine gave up a hit on the second pitch of the game and then dominated No. 18 Wake Forest with a career-high 11 strikeouts in 7.0 innings as the No. 17 Hurricanes cruised to a 13-1 victory Friday night at Mark Light Field. The win was the 1,100th Division I win for Miami head coach Jim Morris. The Demon Deacons drop to 32-16 overall and 15-9 in the ACC, while the Hurricanes improve to 33-16 overall and 15-10 in the conference.
Maine's 1-0 pitch was belted for a double by junior All-American Matt Antonelli to lead off the game. After freshman Dustin Hood's sacrifice bunt, freshman Allan Dykstra gave Wake Forest a 1-0 lead with his ACC-best ninth sacrifice fly.
Maine recovered to hold the Demon Deacons hitless over the next 7.0 innings and record the most strikeouts by a Hurricane pitcher since 1999. Maine improved to 9-2 on the season and walked three in the outing. Jon McLean pitched the final two innings to complete Miami's second one-hitter of the season.
Freshman Brad Kledzik (5-3) gave up five earned runs on nine hits in six innings in the loss for the Demon Deacons. The righty has gone at least 6.0 innings in seven of his nine ACC starts.
The Deacons' offense remained silent Friday night. Since routing Maryland 15-4 back on April 21, Wake Forest has not managed more than four runs in any of their six games. The Deacons are batting just .146 (31-for-212) over the span.
Jemile Weeks, Jon Jay, Danny Valencia and Richard O'Brien Jr. all pounded-out two hits for Miami and Tommy Giles and Blake Tekotte both drove in three runs.
Weeks singled to leadoff the Miami first and moved to third on Jay's single to left. Valencia's sac fly to center tied the game at 1-1. The inning ended when Jay was thrown out at home attempting to score on a throwing error on Alonso's two-out grounder to second.
The Hurricanes took a 2-1 lead in the second thanks to some stingy play at the plate and a Wake Forest error. Eddy Rodriguez singled to lead off the inning and moved to second with two outs on Roger Tomas' grounder. Dennis Raben followed by fouling off five pitches with two strikes against him. His persistence paid off when Antonelli dropped a towering fly ball at third, prolonging the inning and allowing Rodriguez to score.
Giles led off the Hurricane third with a walk and moved to second on Jay's bunt single. Valencia advanced both runners with a sac bunt. Alonso followed with an RBI single to right to give UM a 3-1 lead.
UM busted the game open with a three-run fourth. Tomas hit a leadoff single up the middle and Weeks walked to setup Giles' two-run triple. Valencia put the Hurricanes up 6-1 with a two-out RBI single to left that scored Giles.
Miami added four runs to its lead in the seventh. O'Brien hit a bases-loaded single, followed by Tomas' sac fly, a RBI double by Tekotte and a bases-loaded walk to Giles.
Tomas hit his second sac fly of the game in the eighth and Tekotte hit a two-run triple to complete the scoring at 13-1.
Wake Forest returns to action with the second game of the series Saturday evening. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Sophomore Eric Niesen will take the mound.
