Spartanburg, S.C. - D'Antona now has 18 home runs this season and 55 in his career to equal the Demon Deacons' all-time mark.
Jamie D'Antona hit a pair of home runs, tying him for the Demon Deacons'
career mark, to go with six RBI as Wake Forest took a 16-8 slugfest over
Wofford tonight at Duncan Park in Spartanburg, S.C.
D'Antona now has 18 home runs this season and 55 in his career to equal
the Demon Deacons' all-time mark. He is one of only nine players in ACC
history to reach 55 home runs. He also has 74 RBI this season.
A junior third baseman from Trumbull, Conn., and a projected early-round
draft pick this spring, D'Antona hit a three-run shot in the top of the
sixth to give Wake Forest (25-15) an 8-2 lead. He added a two-run homer
in the eighth to go with a sacrifice fly in the fourth inning as he was
3-for-3 on the night with four runs scored.
Ryan Johnson, who entered the game with a team-high .406 batting
average, went 4-for-5 with three RBI. Adam Bourassa added three hits
for the Demon Deacons.
Trailing 5-0 in the bottom of the fourth, the Terriers (7-29) got on the
board on a two-run homer by Tony Carbone. Other offensive highlights
for Wofford included a two-run opposite field homer from Zach Pittman
and a two-run pinch-hit double by Casey Dwyer. The Terriers scored
eight runs and had 15 hits against Wake Forest for the second time this
season.
Steve Casey extended his hitting streak to 18 games with a pair of
singles. He's now batting .367 during the streak. Carbone, Matt Lein,
and Jesse Cole also had two hits for the Terriers.
The Demon Deacons scored a pair of unearned runs in the top of the
second to take a 2-0 lead before a Johnson RBI double in the third
extended the margin to 3-0. Johnson later keyed a three-run seventh
inning with a two-run double that gave Wake Forest an 11-2 lead.
Kyle Young (4-0) allowed two runs on seven hits over six innings to pick
up the victory. He struck out four and walked one.
Culley Kline (1-8), the first of five Terrier pitchers, took the loss
but did not allow an earned run in 1.2 innings of work.
Wofford and Wake Forest return to conference action this weekend. The
Terriers will be at VMI while the Demon Deacons host Virginia.
