Deacons Fall at UNC Greensboro, 12-4

Greensboro, N.C. - The Wake Forest baseball team fell 12-4 on the road at UNC Greensboro on Wednesday night in the Gate City. The Spartans win the season series, two games to none. Wake Forest suffered its first loss in Greensboro since 1998.

The Deacons (11-18) got off to a good start putting two runs on the scoreboard in the top of the first. After Nick Blue led off with a walk, Ben Ingold doubled to score a run. Then J.B. Tucker's RBI single gave Wake Forest a 2-0 lead.

Wake Forest couldn't hold the lead as starter Tim Morley was chased after three innings. He allowed one run in the first and two in the third.
 

 

Deacon reliever Charlie Mellies didn't fare much better, allowing five runs in the fourth, although one Wake Forest error three were unearned.

Wake Forest posted one run in the fifth. Casey Sterk led off with a triple to right-center field and scored on Nick Blue's RBI groundout. Blue drove in another run in the seventh on a single that scored Ryder Mathias, cutting the lead to 8-4.

Morley took the loss for the Deacons falling to 2-4. He lasted three innings, allowing three runs on three hits and four walks with a pair of strikeouts.

Chris Mason was excellent on the mound for UNCG, improving to 3-1 with the win. He struck out eight Deacons in seven innings. Mason allowed just three earned runs on seven hits.

Wake Forest's loss tonight is the team's tenth straight, the longest losing streak since 1987.

Wake Forest returns to action this weekend at Duke. The Deacons begin their three-game series in Durham on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. Stan Cotten and Cory Provus call the action on 98.1 WBRF and wakeforestsports.com.
