Chapel Hill, NC -
The 25th-ranked Wake Forest baseball team defeated North
Carolina in Chapel Hill on Friday afternoon at Boshamer Stadium by a 11-5
count. Cory Sullivan's four hits tied a career high and Jamie D'Antona homered
and drove a career-best four runs as the Demon Deacons improve their ACC
record to 3-1 in the ACC and 15-4 overall.
Sophomore starter Ben Clayton earned the victory for the Demon
Deacons. Clayton threw 5.2 innings and gave up three runs for his third win of
the season.
Wake Forest took the lead for good on freshman Jamie D'Antona's two-run
homer in the third. D'Antona's fourth of the season gave the Demon Deacons a 3-
2 lead. D'Antona finished the day with three hits and a career-high four runs
batted in. In the next inning, Wake Forest tacked on two more runs before
pulling away in the sixth.
In the sixth, Carlos Brackley led off with a single and Matt Price got
aboard on an infield hit. Jamie Athas moved both runners into scoring position
with a sacrifice bunt. That set the table for Jason Aquilante who threaded a
bouncing ball through the middle scoring both Brackley and Price. Two more
runs came across before the inning was over and the Deacons owned a commanding
9-2 lead.
The bullpen sealed the deal for the Demon Decaons. Freshman Adam
Hanson threw 1.1 innings of scoreless relief with two strikeouts. Josh
Bartlett came on in the eighth and pitched the final two innings.
Senior All-American Cory Sullivan tied a career-high four hits, a feat
he has performed four times in just his second season as a Demon Deacon.
Senior third baseman Corey Slavik, who went hitless in his first four at-bats, lined
a single down the right-field line in the eighth inning to extend his personal
hitting streak to 19 games.
Wake Forest (15-4) continues its series on Saturday afternoon at UNC's
Boshamer Stadium at 1:00 p.m. Freshman Kyle Sleeth gets the start for the
Demon Deacons.
