WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -
The 25th-ranked Wake Forest baseball team defeated
Appalachian State 13-4 on Tuesday afternoon at Hooks Stadium. The Wake
Forest bats came alive during the game as the team pounded out 20 hits,
a season-high, on their way to 13 runs. Offensively, the star of the
game was senior third baseman Corey Slavik who homered twice, going
three-for-five with five runs batted in.
Freshman Josh Hansen conrtibuted with a home run of his own in the
sixth inning. Jason Aquilante collected three hits, Carlos Brackley and
Cory Sullivan each doubled twice.
On the mound, freshman Kyle Sleeth threw four scoreless innings before
yielding to Sullivan who made his second pitching appearance of the
year. Sullivan struck out three batters in three innings but also gave
up two earned runs. Ben Elbe was the third and final pitcher of the day
for Wake Forest. He pitched two scoreless innings and fanned three
batters.
Wake Forest broke open the game by hanging a six-spot on ASU in the
sixth inning. The inning was highlighted by the home runs from Hansen,
a two-run shot over the left field wall, and Slavikâs two-run homer to
right. When the dust cleared, the Deacons had built an insurrmountable
eight run lead.
The win gives the Demon Deacons an overall record of 14-3. The
Mountineers slide to 5-14 on the year. Wake Forest finished its
eight-game homestand with a 7-1 record. The Demon Deacons hit the road
for the first time since Feb. 26 as they face Virginia Commonwealth at
2:00 p.m. on Wednesday in Richmond. The game will be broadcasted live
