MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. - Junior pitcher Scott Siemon (4-1) pitched seven innings,
giving up two runs on five hits and striking out seven batters to lead the
24th-ranked Wake Forest Demon Deacons to a 4-2 victory over the Georgia
Bulldogs on the second day of the Hormel Foods Baseball Classic at the
Metrodome on Saturday.
Wake Forest jumped on top early with two runs in the top of the first
inning. After Cory Sullivan walked to lead the game off, Jason Aquilante
doubled to right field to bring in Sullivan for the Deacs' first run. After
two straight outs, catcher Dan Conway doubled to center field, scoring
Aquilante to give Wake a 2-0 lead.
Wake added two more runs in the top of the third. Both runs came on
designated hitter Danny Borrell's fifth home run of the season, increasing
the Wake Forest advantage to 4-0.
Georgia scored its only two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Brian
Rainwater hit a two-run homer to right field to account for both of the
Bulldogs' runs.
For Wake Forest, Corey Slavik went 3-for-4 leading the Deacons at the
plate. Aquilante and Sullivan each went 2-for-4. Aquilante also drove in one
run. Georgia was led by Rainwater, going 2-for-3 with two RBI.
David Bush pitched the final two innings for Wake Forest, giving up no runs
on just one hit to pick up his second save of the season. Rob Moravek (1-1)
pitched 6 1/3 innings, surrendering four runs on eight hits and striking out
six batters to take the loss for Georgia.
With the win, Wake Forest improves to 9-3 on the season, while Georgia
drops to 8-2 with the loss. Wake will continue playing in the Hormel Foods
Classic on Sunday when they take on the host Minnesota Golden Gophers. The
first pitch is set for 1:05 p.m. central time.
