WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The Wake Forest baseball team notched its fourth
straight victory with an 11-3 decision against High Point on Tuesday
afternoon at Hooks Stadium. Freshman designated hitter Josh Hansen led
the Deacons offensively going 2-of-4 with a home run and three RBI to
help Wake Forest improve its record to 8-2 overall.
Sophomore Ryan Braun earned his first victory of the year by pitching
five innings, allowing just one earned run on four hits and striking out
five.
"It was a good team effort today. I thought Ryan Braun threw well. He
started throwing well once he got settled in and got a feel for the
mound. We've been cautious with him and he hasn't thrown as much as
some of the other guys. He's still on a pitch count," head coach George
Greer said.
The Deacons got on the scoreboard early against High Point starter
Kevin Burch, who suffered the loss. Wake Forest posted three runs in
the first inning, beginning with a two-run blast off the bat of Hansen.
He took the first pitch he saw from Burch and socked it over the left
field wall to give the Deacs a 2-0 lead. Later in the inning, freshman
Jamie D'Antona scored on wild pitch.
Wake Forest added runs in the fourth, fifth, sixth, seventh and eighth
innings. In the fifth inning, a High Point error and a balk combined
with two hits gave the Deacons three run to hold a commanding 7-2 lead.
At that point, Braun gave way to three Deacon relievers who limited the
Panthers to just one run over the final four innings.
"Adam Hanson gave up a couple hits but he was throwing for the first
time since Houston and he threw well," Greer said. "Josh Hansen hit the
ball hard today as did Jamie D'Antona. Stephen Ghutzman had a couple of
big hits for us."
The Demon Deacons will be idle until Friday when they host the
University of New Orleans for a weekend series. Game time for Friday's
game is 2:30 p.m.
