April 22, 2007 Brooklyn, NY --The Wagner College women's water polo team finished off the regular season earlier today with a 10-6 victory over St. Francis NY to head into the playoffs on a five game winning streak with a record of 15-14 and 7-3 in MAAC play. Wagner ends the year in a tie for second place with the Iona Gaels who they will meet in the opening round of the MAAC Championships next weekend at Marist College. As for this game it was all Wagner from the opening sprint. The Green & White opened the game with a score from Corrine Travous (New Ulm, MN/Cumberland Valley) and after the Terriers answered with a score, Wagner ran off four in a row to close the period. The Seahawks got goals from Billy Hoelck (San Diego, CA/U. of San Diego HS), Stacey Travous (New Ulm, MN/Cumberland Valley), Alexandra Tomlinson (Telford, PA/Souderton), and a score by Camille Karimzad (Walnut Creek, CA/Campolindo) that skipped past the goalie as the first quarter buzzer blared. The second period was more of the same as Anne Wolkenhauer (Fullerton, CA/Fullerton) hit the back of the cage on a dish from Karimzad while Stacey Travous fired one home to put Wagner in control at 7-1 with 5:17 to go in the first half. Wagner held a 7-2 halftime advantage and built it to 8-2 when Hoelck scored her team leading 84th goal of the season. The scrappy Terriers fought back tallying the next two goals but Stacey Travous ended the period with a score to give Wagner back some breathing room at 9-4. A sloppy and overly physical fourth quarter then ensued with the Terriers adding two goals and Stacey Travous tacking on her fourth of the day to round out the scoring. Senior Katie Hauck (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville) was stellar in goal refuting the possibility of 11 Terrier shots from entering the goal while adding five steals and two assists. Wagner now moves on to the MAAC Championship tournament this coming Saturday and Sunday held at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, New York. The tournament is comprised of the top four teams in the league. The winner of the two day affair moves onto the field of eight for the 2007 NCAA Tournament. Wagner will take on Iona College who they split with this season in two meetings. |
