Stats

Villanova, PA -- The Wagner College women's water polo team defeated the Villanova Wildcats earlier today in the first of two MAAC games on the day. The Seahawks dropped a baker's dozen on the home team winning 13-6 to improve their record to 20-12 (5-0 MAAC). The Seahawks got scores from a variety of players and the game was never in doubt as the Green & White posted the first four goals of the game.

Wagner opened the first period with goals by Nicole Maichrowicz (Temple City, CA/Temple City) and Stacey Travous (New Ulm, MN/Cumblerand Valley) and led after one by a count of 2-0. The second period opened with more Seahawk scoring as Corrine Travous (New Ulm, MN/Cumberland Valley) rocketed one into the back of the net and Billy Hoelck (San Diego, CA/U. of San Diego HS) tossed one in from downtown to put Wagner up 4-0. Nova would answer with two straight goals but the Seahawks would come back with a score from senior Courtney Crase (Saratoga, CA/Saratoga) and led at the half by a count of 5-3.

The third period was all Wagner as they blanked the Wildcats in the scoring department 5-0. Stacey Travous opened the period with a goal, then Maichrowicz drew a four meter penalty which led to a conversion by Sara Kramer (Carlisle, PA/Cumberland Valley). Hoelck followed with two more goals to give her three on the day and Crase closed the period with her second goal giving Wagner a commanding 10-3 lead headed to the final frame. Villanova tried to rally to start the fourth with a goal but the Seahawks answered immediately with scores from Kramer and Stacey Travous. Stacey's twin sister Corrine would finish out the scoring with her tenth tally of the year and Wagner went on for the win 13-6.

As usual Katie Hauck (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville) started in net and was solid, solid as a rock. Hauck thwarted 12 Nova shots through three periods and then freshman Jennifer Anderson (Whittier, CA/La Serna) held down the fort in the fourth as the Seahawks cruised to victory. About the only negative thing to come from the game was the loss of junior Natasha Peterson (Whittier, CA/La Habra). Peterson had to leave the game in the first half with a broken nose after receiving a violent headbutt from a Villanova player. A timetable has not been set yet for her return to the pool.

Next up for Wagner is a game later today against the Marist Red Foxes. Wagner downed Marist just a week ago 11-4 in Poughkeepsie and will look to sweep the season series with the game starting at 1pm.
