Seahawks Topple Terriers 15-9 In MAAC Play

Junior Billy Hoelck scored seven goals in Wagner's win over St. Francis

April 14, 2007

Stats

Poughkeepsie, NY --The Wagner College women's water polo team returned to the pool earlier today and returned to the win column with a 15-9 conference victory over St. Francis College in a game played at Marist College. The victory pushes Wagner to 10-12 on the year and 2-1 in MAAC play.

It was a sluggish start for the Green & White as the game was tied at two with 2:13 to go in the first period. A Natasha Peterson (Whittier, CA/La Habra) goal with :42 remaining in the first gave the Seahawks the lead 3-2 headed into the second period. It was more back and forth in the second stanza as the Terriers outscored Wagner 2-1 and the game was knotted at four headed into halftime. The lone Seahawk score in that quarter came from Alexandra Tomlinson (Telford, PA/Souderton).

The third quarter proved to be the best on the game for the Seahawks. Generally slow starters coming out of the locker room, Wagner, on this day, blitzed the Terriers for seven goals. Three goals came from junior Billy Hoelck (San Diego, CA/U. of San Diego HS) who would go on to match a career high with seven goals in the contest. Hoelck added four steals and three drawn ejections including a five meter penalty.

The game saw eight different scorers for Wagner and in that critical third period the Seahawks also got another score from Peterson as well as a goal apiece from Amber McMichael (Reading, PA/Gov. Mifflin), Camille Karimzad (Walnut Creek, CA/Campolindo), and Lindsey Rodgers (Anaheim Hills, CA/Canyon). Following the period Wagner moved to the fourth in control with an 11-6 advantage.

In the fourth quarter Hoelck tacked on two more goals while Yvette Viramontes (Montebello, CA/Montebello) and Corrine Travous (New Ulm, MN/Cumberland Valley) also added scorers. Senior Katie Hauck (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville) went the whole way in net denying 11 shots, picking up two steals, and closed the game by not allowing a five meter penalty shot on the contest's final play.

The Seahawks will be back in the pool later today when they rumble with Marist College for the third this season. Thus far Wagner has yet to knock off the defending MAAC champs this season and is coming off an overtime loss to the Poughkeepsie based school last week.
