April 8, 2006

Stats

Loudonville, NY -- The Wagner College women's water polo team started off MAAC play with a defensive battle against the Gaels of Iona College. The Seahawks came out the victors in this game where goals came at a premium 5-4. It is by the far the lowest scoring output for the Seahawks (16-12, 1-0 MAAC) this season who came into the contest averaging just under 11 goals a game good for third in the nation.

The Gaels jumped out to an early 2-0 lead as the Wagner offense sputtered early. However the Seahawks battled back to tie things at three headed into halftime. Iona then retook the lead in the second half at 4-3. Wagner answered when sophomore Amber McMichael (Shillington, PA/Governor Mifflin) tallied the tying goal in a man up scenario evening the score at four. The game was still knotted at four when with 1:47 remaining in the fourth period freshman Nicole Maichrowicz (Temple City, CA/Temple City) scored a crucial goal to put Wagner up 5-4.

Freshman Jennifer Anderson (Whittier, CA/La Serna) who was a late addition to the starting lineup was able to hold off the Gaels and preserve the win. Anderson tallied seven saves and started in place of Katie Hauck (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville) who was shaken up after taking a shot to the head during warmups.

The Green & White also received two goals from Stacey Travous (New Ulm, MN/Cumberland Valley) and a goal and three steals from Anne Wolkenhauer (Fullerton, CA/Fullerton Union).

Wagner is next in action later today against Siena.
