Stats

Ann Arbor, MI --Top 20 ranked Indiana University edged Wagner College in women's water polo earlier today 10-7 in the Seahawk's final game at the Wolverine Invitational held at the University of Michigan. The loss drops Wagner to 7-9 and has them on a five game skid as they head back to Staten Island.

Wagner fell into an early hole as the Hoosiers jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but then with 2:45 remaining in the first Stacey Travous (New Ulm, MN/Cumberland Valley) scored to close things to 2-1 at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter saw the Wagner offense come alive as Yvette Viramontes (Montebello, CA/Montebello) tallied a score to even the game at 2. Junior Billy Hoelck (San Diego, CA/U. of San Diego HS) put one by the goaltender to give the Green & White their first lead of the day at 3-2.

Indiana scored another goal to tie the score at three but Hoelck scored again putting Wagner back in front 4-2 with 3:27 to go in the first half. That was short lived as Indiana answered with two straight scores and held a halftime advantage 5-4. The Seahawks proved their resiliency coming out of the proverbial locker rooms as Alexandra Tomlinson (Telford, PA/Souderton) took a feed from Corrine Travous (New Ulm, MN/Cumberland Valley) and again the game was tied up, this time at five.

The Hoosiers scored two in a row again to build a two goal lead at 7-5. Tomlinson scored again to draw Wagner within one at 7-6. Wagner would yet again tie the score to start off the fourth as Stacey Travous drew a five meter penalty which was converted by Nicole Maichrowicz (Temple City, CA/Temple City) to even the score at 7.

The Seahawk defense then hit the skids as the Hoosiers rattled off three goals in a row the last coming with 5:46 in the contest as Indiana led 10-7. Wagner would be unable to rally with any scores and would end up with the loss.

Wagner is back in action next Sunday as they travel to Marist College to take on top 20 ranked Hartwick College.
