March 17, 2007 Ann Arbor, MI --A day after they were scheduled to arrive at the University of Michigan, the Wagner Seahawks women's water polo team finally arrived in Ann Arbor for the Wolverine Invitational where they immediately took on the 17th ranked University of Michigan Wolverines. After a stellar first half the Seahawks ran out of gas and fell to the blue and maize by a count of 12-6 dropping their record to .500 on the season at 7-7. Wagner started off the game with gusto after falling down 1-0, Alexandra Tomlinson (Telford, PA/Souderton) found the back of the net on a double man up possession for Wagner to knot the score at 1. Junior Billy Hoelck (San Diego, CA/U. of San Diego HS) would follow about a minute later with a score to give the Seahawks their first lead of the day at 2-1. The Wolverines then ran off three straight goals to close out the first period and led 4-2 after one. The Green & White rallied in the second quarter as Hoelck and Stacey Travous (New Ulm, MN/Cumberland Valley) connected on back to back scores to even the contest at four. The Seahawks had a chance to retake the lead after Camille Karimzad (Walnut Creek, CA/Campolindo) drew a five meter penalty on a counter attack, but that opportunity went by the boards and Michigan tacked on another score to lead at the half 5-4. The Seahawks hit a wall to start the second half and Michigan took full advantage running off six straight goals to build an 11-4 advantage. Wagner would attempt to stop the bleeding as Nicole Maichrowicz (Temple City, CA/Temple City) and Stacey Travous would score two of the next three goals in the game to make it 12-6 with 5:37 to go in the fourth. However, Wagner would get no closer than that. Senior Katie Hauck (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville) put together a solid day in net, refunding 14 Michigan shots while adding two steals. Stacey Travous along with two goals drew three ejections while classmate Natasha Peterson (Whittier, CA/La Habra) drew four ejections. Next up for Wagner will be a contest against California Baptist at 5:00 pm. The Seahawks did battle with Cal Baptist last year in Riverside, California falling by a score of 12-11 in overtime. Also of note Wagner's scheduled game against Michigan State from last evening has officially been canceled and will not be made up. |
