Senior Cori Travous helped anchor the Wagner defense with six steals

March 3, 2007

Stats

Cambridge, MA --After a high scoring affair that saw a combined 23 goals in their first game of the day, it was a defensive battle that was won by the Wagner women's water polo team 6-4 in their nightcap at the ECAC Championships. The Seahawks downed Harvard in their second game after falling to Brown to open the tourney, and with the win move to 7-5 on the year and advance to take on MAAC foe Marist in the 5th place game tomorrow morning.

The game started out all Wagner as the Seahawks jumped on the Crimson with three straight goals to open the game leading after the first period 3-0. Senior Stacey Travous (New Ulm, MN/Cumberland Valley) sparked the Green & White offense in the first tallying the first two goals while Nicole Maichrowicz (Temple City, CA/Temple City) added another to give the Seahawks a comfortable lead.

Harvard would rally in the second period outscoring Wagner 2-1 to pull into half trailing just 4-2. The lone Wagner goal in that period coming by Billy Hoelck (San Diego, CA/U. of San Diego HS) on a feed from Yvette Viramontes (Montebello, CA/Montebello). Wagner would storm out of the gates to start the second half with two goals in the first two minutes of play as Stacey Travous added her third goal and Hoelck her second putting the Seahawks up 6-2.

Wagner would allow two goals towards the middle of the third period and that was it for the scoring. The fourth quarter saw a defensive stalemate highlighted by the play of Corrine Travous (New Ulm, MN/Cumberland Valley) who registered six steals and goalie Katie Hauck (Pottsville, PA/Pottsville) who respectfully denied admittance to nine Harvard shots.

The Seahawks are back in action tomorrow morning at 11am when they take on fellow MAAC squad Marist for the first time since last season's MAAC Championship game loss. This game however will have no bearing on MAAC standings.
