Countrywide Wagner Student-Athlete Of The Month

Sarah Garrette (right) was tabbed as the Wagner College Countrywide student-athlete of the month

Oct. 9, 2007

September 2007
Junior Sarah Garrette (Barrington, IL / Barrington)

Garrette is having a solid junior campaign, hitting a team-best .187, with a team-best 0.85 blocks per game and 2.31 kills per game.

Q: "How has the season gone for you thus far?"

A: "The season so far has been good. I am really impressed by the freshmen our coach brought in. Even though we are a young team I feel we are doing very well and maturing at a fast rate."

Q: "Explain the transition from being an underclassmen to the team's elder statesmen?"

A: "It requires everybody to take on a higher role and I still get advice from last year's seniors."

Q: "Is there a sense of unfinished business from last year after losing a tough five-setter in the NEC Tournament?"

A: "Wagner College volleyball finally got a taste of what it takes to compete with the upper echelon of the conference and so now that we have been there, we know what it feels like and we are fighting to get back there."

Q: "How has the transition been from Illinois to New York City"

A: "It was a big change. I'm on an island instead of a cornfield. Everything is so much harder to get to. I do like the fact that you can drive 30 minutes and be in a different state. Having New York City just a ferry ride away is surreal."

Q: "You and Ali Ridge from the women's basketball team are both from Barrington, IL. Does it help having someone from home with you at Wagner?"

A: "Being so far from home, it was kind of cool having someone around who knew what home was like. She understood what the Midwest and Chi-town was like."

Q: "Chipotle, Moe's or Qdoba?"

A: "Hands down Chipotle. The Chiptole burrito is our unofficial team mascot."

Q: "What are some of your other hobbies & interests?"

A: "I really enjoy going to museums and seeing movies, playing ultimate Frisbee ... Basically anything outdoors."

Q: "What is your favorite movie?"

"The Graduate."

Q: "Who is your favorite musician?"

A: "John Mayer ... it's a guilty pleasure"

Q: "What's your favorite song to listen to before a match?"

"Kanye West's "Stronger"

Q: "Favorite sports other then volleyball?"

A: "Tennis & Golf"

Q: "What are your plans for the summer?"

"I plan on studying abroad during the second semester and spending the first month of the summer traveling across Europe on my own. Afterward, I would like to find an internship at a small gallery in Chicago."

Q: "What are your post-graduation plans?"

A: "Hopefully go to graduate school and work on the business side of a design firm or work for a major museum back in Chicago."

Q: What is your favorite part of home matches?"

A: "When our team makes a great play and the crowd gets real into it."

Q: "What is one thing that people don't know about the rigors of being a D-1 volleyball student-athlete?"

A: "The time commitment ... We are always in the gym."

Q: "You have improved every season at Wagner, what do you attribute this to?"

A: "My freshman year, I was really stubborn and didn't listen. Last year, I went in with an open mind and really listened and saw significant changes in my game. Hopefully this trend will continue and I will peak as a senior."
