Oct. 14, 2007

Box Score

Staten Island, NY - Sacred Heart defeated Wagner by a 3-0 score in Northeast Conference (NEC) volleyball action at the Spiro Sports Center. The Pioneers won by scores of 30-23, 30-27 and 30-28.

Sacred Heart is now 6-13 and 1-1 in the NEC while the Seahawks fall to 2-12 and 0-3 in the conference.

Wagner showcased their strong serving, which is ranked No. 1 in the NEC, with eight aces, compared to just four for the Pioneers, but were out-hit .208-.074.

With Sacred Heart clinging to a 13-12 led in the first game, the Pioneers used a 7-1 run to jump out in front 20-13 and would not be challenged winning 30-23. The Seahawks came roaring out of the gates with a 9-1 run to start the second game, highlighted by the strong serving of sophomore Gabi Hilk (Wilmington, DE / Alexis I. DuPont), which included three Erin Henneberger (Fr., Livonia, MI / Ladywood) kills. The Seahawks would maintain their lead throughout the match and were up 24-16 when Sacred Heart made their move. The Pioneers rattled off eight straight points to tie it up at 24-24. After an Ashley Pepper (Fr., Washington Court House, OH / Washington Senior) kill temporarily stopped the Sacred Heart momentum, but the Pioneers rebounded to close out the match on a 6-2 run to win going away 30-27.

In the third game with Wagner up 21-17, Sacred Heart used an 8-1 run to go in front 25-22. The Seahawks quickly wrestled the lead back with a 6-1 spurt of their own to make it 28-26. It would not be enough as the Pioneers closed out the game and the match with a 4-0 run to win 30-28.

Pepper led Wagner with 15 kills, on .045 hitting. Sophomore Alex Klein (Cresent Springs, KY / Notre Dame Academy) had a strong match with nine kills and four digs while Hilk registered 35 assists to round out the top offensive performers. Pacing the defense was the freshmen duo of Kelsey Rose (Springfield Township, OH / Roger Bacon) and Jennifer Lechman (Effingham, IL / Effingham), each of whom had 10 digs.

Alex Bavasi's 13 kills, on.417 hitting, and Annie Archer's 11 kills, on .421 hitting, led the way for the Pioneers.

Wagner is next in action on Saturday, Oct. 20 when the Seahawks head to Robert Morris for a 5:00 pm match.
