Oct. 2, 2007

Box Score

Staten Island, NY - After taking the first game 31-29 against Saint Peter's the Wagner Seahawks lost the final three games by scores of 31-29, 30-27 and 30-19 in non-conference action at the Spiro Sports Center.

With the loss Wagner moves to 2-9 while the Peahens improve to 5-15.

The Seahawks charged out of the gates with a match-opening 11-1 run, sparked by sophomore Alex Klein's (Cresent Springs, KY / Notre Dame Academy) two aces and two kills. The Seahawks extended their lead to 16-4 and appeared to be on their way to an easy win when the Peahens countered with a 17-5 run to tie the score at 21-21. Wagner went back in front 25-22 but Saint Peter's would not go away quietly, scoring the next four points to take their first lead of the game at 26-25. The Seahawks answered with another Klein kill to highlight a 6-3 game-winning spurt as Wagner was victorious 31-29. Also standing out was freshman Ashley Pepper (Washington Court House, OH / Washington Senior), who had five kills, on .273 hitting.

The second game was a back-and-forth affair as neither team could take more then a four-point lead. Down 24-20, Klein sparked a furious 6-0 rally with two aces and one kill to give Wagner the lead 26-24. The Peahens countered with three straight points to go up by one at 27-26. With the score tied at 29-29, Saint Peter's scored the final two points of the game to even the match at one game apiece.

Game three was another see-saw battle but with the score tied at 22-22, Saint Peter's went on a game-changing 6-0 run, spurred by the serving of Yomi Angulo which included two aces. The Seahawks would cut the lead to 29-27 with a 5-1 run of their own but it was not enough as Saint Peter's won 30-27.

The Peahens were in control of the fourth and final game from the onset winning going away 30-19.

Klein recorded a team-best 14 kills, 17 digs and five aces to lead the Seahawks. Also standing out for the Green & White were Pepper (14 kills, .140 hitting), junior Sarah Garrette (Barrington, IL / Barrington) (nine kills, .207 hitting and eight blocks) freshman Erin Henneberger (Livonia, MI / Ladywood) (10 kills, 12 digs), sophomore Gabi Hilk (Wilmington, DE / Alexis I. DuPont) (44 assists), freshman Jennifer Lechman (Effingham, IL / Effingham) (25 digs) and classmate Kelsey Rose (Springfield Township, OH / Roger Bacon) (11 digs).

Kim Mendoza's match-high 18 kills and 20 digs led the way for Saint Peter's. Yomi Angulo also had a solid match with 24 digs and five aces.

The Seahawks return to action on Friday, Oct. 12 when they travel to NJIT for a 5 pm match.
