Garrette's Career-High 16 Kills Not Enough In Loss At Lehigh

Sarah Garrette leads the Seahawks in kills (2.5 pg) and second in hitting percentage (.284)

Sept. 11, 2007

Box Score

Bethlehem, PA - Sarah Garrette's (Jr., Barrington, IL / Barrington) career-high 16 kills, on .344 hitting, went for naught as the Wagner Seahawks (2-2) dropped a tough 3-1 decision to Lehigh (2-8) at Taylor Gym. The Green & White fell by scores of 30-24, 30-26, 29-31, 30-22.

The Seahawks raced out of the gates, with a 7-1 lead in the first game. Following a timeout, Lehigh countered with a 12-5 run to take their first lead at 13-12. With the score tied at 15-15, the Mountain Hawks ripped off four straight points to go up 19-15 on their way to a 30-24 win.

Lehigh continued their hot play in the second game, jumping out in front 14-6. With the Mountain Hawks up 29-21, Wagner went on a 5-0 run, fueled by three Garrette kills and two from freshman Ashley Pepper (Washington Court House, OH / Washington Senior). The Seahawk comeback fell just short as Lehigh took the second game 30-26 on a Tony Marion kill.

The third game was played to a virtual standstill as neither team led by more then four points. With the Seahawks trailing 29-27 and facing defeat, sophomore Alex Klein (Cresent Springs, KY / Notre Dame Academy) led a furious 4-0 game-ending run with two kills to lead Wagner to a 31-29 win.

Trailing 13-12 in the fourth game, Lehigh took control with a 13-4 run to go up 26-16 on their way to a match clinching 30-22 win.

Lehigh out-hit Wagner .211-.169 and recorded 16 service aces, compared to just five for the Green & White.

Garrette also chipped in with four blocks while classmate Kelly Kasper (West Windsor, NJ / Windsor Plainsboro South) recorded a hitting percentage of .500 with nine kills. Pepper turned in her first career double-double (10 kills, 18 digs) while sophomore Gabi Hilk (Wilmington, DE / Alexis I. DuPont) had 41 assists to round out the top performers for the Seahawks.

Wagner will get another shot at Lehigh when the Seahawks host the Mountain Hawks at the Spiro Sports Center on Thursday, Sept. 13 at 7:00 pm.
