Wagner Soccer Drops Offensive Battle To VMI, 5-3

Sophomore Stephanie Burnett was among three Seahawks to score their first goals of the year Friday

Sept. 8, 2006

Box Score

Staten Island, NY - The Wagner College Women's Soccer lost a close, physical battle to the Keydets of the Virginia Military Institute this afternoon at Wagner College Stadium by the score of 5-3. They now move to a record of 0-3-0 on the season.

The Keydets (2-1-0) were first to get on the board with a goal when senior Karen Bill scored off a corner kick with just 11:03 gone by in the contest.

But Wagner came right back to counter when senior Lizzie Wood (Boca Raton, FL/St. Andrew's) put in a point blank opportunity after a Brooke Keany (Fr., Rumson, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven) shot was saved but deflected to Wood for the assist.

VMI broke the deadlock with a goal, again, off the foot of senior Karen Bill - who finished up with an impressive four goal performance on the day - with 18:43 left in the half. She would come right back less than seven minutes later to score again when she headed the ball off a corner to put the Keydets ahead, 3-1.

Keeping in line with the offensive theme on both sides, Wagner back Stephanie Burnett (So., Satellite Beach, FL/Satellite) added her first goal of the season when junior Danielle Telleria (Orlando, FL/Winter Springs) found her for a header off a corner kick from eight yards out.

In the second half, Bill connected for her fourth goal of the game for the Keydets with 4:47 gone by in the period to give VMI a two-goal advantage. The Seahawks would breed hope once again when they cut it to one thanks to freshman midfielder Danielle Sheehan's (Farmingdale, NY/Farmingdale) first collegiate goal with close to ten minutes remaining in the game.

Wagner wouldn't be that close, however, for the rest of the game after sophomore Megan Strand put the game out of reach with her score with just 3:32 left to give the score that would end up as the final, 5-3.

As for the Seahawks in goal, senior Ashley Wilson (Secane, PA/Upper Darby) worked the entire 90 minutes in net, recording two saves.

The Seahawks now pack their bags and head on the road to play Binghamton this Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
