Sept. 22, 2005 Somerset, NJ -- For the first time in NEC history, the men's and women's golf championships will be heading to Disney. Disney's Lake Buena Vista Golf Course and Palm Golf Course will be the sites of the 2006 women's and men's golf championships, respectively. Both courses are two of the six illustrious Disney courses that are one of America's top-75 courses according to Golf Digest. All of Disney's six courses are certified by Audubon International as Cooperative Wildlife Sanctuaries because of the various wildlife forms golfers encounter on their outings. Traditionally, the NEC Golf Championships are held throughout the Northeast with select NEC schools being the host. Last year the women's golf championship was held at Clustered Spires Golf Club in Frederick, Maryland, while the men's championship was at Quicksilver Golf Club in Midway, Pennsylvania. At the Gold Medal Resort, as was named by GOLF Magazine, the NEC will serve as the tournament host. The women tee off at the Lake Buena Vista Golf Course (hole #7 pictured on right) from April 29-30. Golf Digest gave this course a four out of five star rating. Only minutes from Downtown Disney, the course has the players golfing next to boats, canals and pine forests. The par 72 course highlights several distinctive features, including an island green on the seventh hole. Palm Golf Course, (hole #18 pictured on bottom left) where the men will play from May 6-7, is one of the locations of the annual PGA Tour Funai Classic. Known as one of the most challenging Disney courses, the Palm Course features nine water holes and 94 bunkers. On the par 72 course, the 18th hole is considered one of the toughest holes on the PGA Tour. For both men and women, the conference championships are a two-day, 36-hole event. Team scores are calculated by adding the team's four lowest scores from each day. The top-10 finishers are selected as all-NEC performers. |
