Petersburg, VA - The East Coast Bowl Committee has announced that Wagner senior kicker/punter Piotr Czech (Keyport, NJ/ Keyport) has been selected to be a member of the North squad in the seventh annual East Coast Bowl Game on Saturday, November 24 at Noon. Czech will join his Wagner classmate Al Phillips (Hialeah, FL/ American), a CB/Return specialist, who will also be a member of the North team. Czech is the top kicker in Wagner history and has been a key weapon in Wagner's 6-4 season in 2007. On Nov. 10, once again history was made at Wagner College Stadium and once again, Piotr Czech was the man responsible. The senior boomed a 56-yard second quarter field goal vs. Saint Francis (PA) that cleared the uprights with some 10 yards to spare. The kick was a career high, a Wagner record and an NEC record. Czech's previous career long was 54 yards, which he accomplished on two occasions last season. Those 54-yarders were the previous NEC longs as well. Czech also set a Wagner record for most field goals made in a season. With 14 field goals in 16 attempts (87.5%), Czech passes Tom O'Riordan split the uprights 13 times in 1984. Also accomplished on kickoffs and a punter, Czech averages 40.1 yards per punt. The East Coast Bowl Committee selects the top 75 Division I-FCS, II, III and NAIA athletes. The 5-11, 195-pound Phillips is tied for fourth in the nation in interceptions/game with six in nine games (0.67/game) and is tied for third in the nation in passes defended (1.78/game) For his career, Phillips has intercepted 16 passes, which places him third on the Wagner all-time interceptions list. Players will report to Petersburg the day before Thanksgiving and spend the holiday making various community visits as well as taking part in practice sessions for NFL scouts. The game itself is a scholarship event with all of the revenue generated directed to a fund for a local high school senior who plans on attending a Division I-FCS, II or III college. The AFA is an association of former players and coaches of all levels to support the sport of football and give back to the game.
