Kenyon Spears is now in his third season as an assistant coach for the Seahawks. Upon joining the coaching staff in 2005-06, he reunited with former coach and mentor, Mike Deane. At Wagner, his duties include on and off campus recruiting, game and practice preparation, opponent scouting, and travel for the Seahawks. Spears previously worked under Deane during the 2002-03 season at his alma mater, Lamar University. The Nome, Texas product was a four-year letter winner at Lamar before receiving a bachelor's of science degree in communications from Lamar in 2001. A student-athlete at Lamar from 1997-01, Spears was a junior on the Cardinals' team that won the 2000 Southland Conference Tournament Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 17 years. Spears earned honorable mention All-Southland Conference selection in 1999-2000 and ranked second on the team in scoring at 10.2 points per game, while leading the team in three-point field goals made (56) and steals (45). He was also the team's top assist man in 2001-02 with 82. Serving as a team captain as a senior, Spears finished his career ranked seventh on the school's all-time list for three-pointers made (121) and 11th in assists (268). Spears was an All-State prep player at Hardin-Jefferson High School in Sour Lake, Texas, where he averaged 27 points and 13 rebounds per game as a senior. |
