Bronx, NY - The Wagner track & field team traveled to the Fordham University Invitational for their second meet of the indoor season and took the competition by storm with seven event wins.
The day started off with a Wagner first. Freshman Mishelle McNamara (West Covina, CA) posted the record for the women's pole vault at 11'0" and a first place finish. This is the first ever women's pole vault competition in the program's history.
The next event brought seniors Ashley Simon (King of Prussia, PA/Upper Merion Area) and Gwendolyn Moore (Teaneck, NJ/Teaneck) second and third place finishes in the women's weight throw, posting 13.97m and 12.54m throws respectively.
Junior Alaina Alfano (East Hanover, NJ/Hanover Park) followed up her record-breaking performance in the long jump last week with a stellar leap of 5.44 meters, good for a second place finish. Alfano also captured first place in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.8 seconds while coming in second in the high jump at 1.63 meters and second in the 60m dash with a time of 7.9 seconds.
Not to be outdone, sophomore Amanda Gland (Woodbury, CT/Nonnewaug), who posted her own school record last week in the triple jump, took first place in the event with a 11.01 meter bound, .25 meters better than the closest competitor. Gland also took second place in the long jump (5.11 meters) and third in the 60m dash (7.9 seconds).
Capping off the women's side of the meet were top notch performances by seniors Samantha Snukis (St. Clair, PA/Nativity BVM) and Jocelyn Ford (Neptune, NJ/Red Bank Catholic). Snukis brought home a first place finish in the 1000 meter run with a time of 3:07.7 while Ford took second in the 500 meter run at 1:18.8, just one second off the school record.
The men's side of competition had spectacular results, starting with senior Dan Mercorelli's (North Haledon, NJ/De Paul Catholic) first place performance in the long jump with a leap of 6.51 meters. Following up Mercolli was freshman Frantz Placide (Miami FL/Arch Bishop Notre), who brought in a first place finish in the 60m dash (7.1 seconds), a second place finish in the triple jump (13.15m) and a third place finish in the long jump (6.20m).
Senior Bryan Pagliuca (Ronkonkoma, NY/Connetquot) came through in first for the high jump, pushing himself 2.04 meters over the bar. The closest competition was fellow Seahawks Marlon McGlashin and Claudio Perfetto (Staten Island, NY/Monsignor Farrell), who both pushed 1.78 meters.
NEC Cross Country Rookie of the Year Derek Rammelkamp (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) took first place in the 5000 meter run with a time of 16.26.9 followed close behind by teammate Allen Koehler (Okeana, OH/William Henry Harrison) who capped off his second place finish at 16.29.2.
The Seahawks will enjoy the Holiday Season and then hit the track on January 12th, where they will take on the competition at the Gulden Relays in Lewisburg, PA.
