OREM, Utah -€“ Utah Valley State seniors Deise Borghetti and Alina Wallauer, and sophomore Lacee Koelliker were honored by being named to the 2004 Division I All-Independent Volleyball Team.
Borghetti was a First Team selection and Wallauer and Koelliker made the second team.
Among other Division I Independent players Borghetti was third in kills per game averaging 4.20, and fifth in total kills with 403. Wallauer ranked eighth in kills per game averaging 3.30, and ninth in total kills with 287, and digs per game averaging 3.49. Koelliker was second in assists per game averaging 11.22, and third in total assists with 1133.
This season eight Division I Independent schools joined together to select weekly -€śPlayer of the Week-€ť awards and All-Independent Teams at the end of the season. Those schools were: IPFW, North Dakota State, Northern Colorado, Providence, South Dakota State, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas-Pan American, and Utah Valley State.
Below is a capsule of the 2004 season accomplishments of the Wolverine All-Independent players:
Deise Borghetti -€“ Senior -€“ Rightside Hitter -€“ Medianeira, Brazil
Borghetti was the fuel that made the Wolverine offensive machine run. The southpaw led the team in kills (403), kills per game (4.20), points (432), points per game (4.50), and attacks (1114). She also notched 216 digs averaging 2.25 per game. She was third on the team in total double-double performances with 8. Borghetti had match-high kills in 10 matches this season, and broke a D-I school record with 30 kills against Texas-Pan American on October 16th. She had the five highest kill totals for the Wolverines this season with matches of 30, 26, 23, 22, and 21 kills. Borghetti had five 20+ kill performances this season and has put up double figure kills in 22 of 26 matches played and double figure digs in 9 of 26 matches played. She was named Division I Independent -€śOffensive Player of the Week-€ť on September 21st and October 19th.
Alina Wallauer -€“ Senior -€“ Outside Hitter -€“ Florianopolis, Brazil
Wallauer was the other half of the Wolverine Brazilian duo. She was the only Wolverine named to the 2004 LaQuinta Volleyball Championship All-Tournament team last weekend. Wallauer finished second on the team in double-doubles (12), kills (287), kills average per game (3.30), digs (304), digs average per game (3.49), points (312.5), points average per game (3.59), and attacks (863). She had double figure kills in 14 of 24 matches played and double figure digs in 18 of 24 matches played. She had three 19 kill matches, and one 20 kill/20 dig match (23) this season. Wallauer tallied 19 kills and 17 digs against Northern Colorado on October 27th. She was named the Division I Independent -€śOffensive Player of the Week-€ť on November 2nd.
Lacee Koelliker - Sophomore - Setter - Las Vegas, Nevada
Koelliker ran the Wolverine offense leading the team by playing in all 101 games during the 2004 season. When she wasn't setting up her team on the offensive side she was all over the court on the defensive end. Koelliker led the Wolverines in digs with 308 and was third in digs per game average with 3.05. She was second on the team in total blocks (66), block assists (61), and blocks per game (0.65). She had 7 block assists in two matches this season. She notched a school record 16 double-doubles averaging a double-double every 1.68 matches. On five different occasions she was two kills away from a triple-double match. She finished with a D-I school record 1133 assists averaging a school record 11.22 assists per game. She led the team with 21 service aces and was second on the team averaging 0.23 service aces per game. She was named Division I Independent -€śSetter of the Week-€ť on September 21st, and October 12th.
