Wolverines Drop Two on Second Day of Independent Championship

OREM, Utah -€“ The Utah Valley State volleyball team struggled in the second day of the Independent championships. They opened the day losing to North Dakota State 30-28,30-26,30-15. In the second game IPFW beat Utah Valley 30-20,27-30,30-21,30-24.

In both matches the Wolverines had opportunities to take the lead but squandered opportunities due to unforced errors.

"We kept putting ourselves in opportunities to pull it out but we threw them away with uncharastic errors," Wolverine coach Sam Atoa said. "We just kind of shot ourselves in the foot."

In game 2 of Utah Valley's match against North Dakota State they led 16-11 and 21-16. But North Dakota State rallied for the win thanks to several kills and Wolverine hitting errors.

North Dakota State led by as many as 15 points in game 3.

Deise Borghetti led Utah Valley State with 14 kills in the first match of the day.

After dropping the first game against IPFW,  the Wolverines rallied for a 30-27 win. IPFW led 22-18 but kills Borghetti, Krystal Taylor and several hitting errors by IPFW gave Utah Valley a 28-27 lead. A service ace by Malia Hoyt and a kill by Jessica Endres gave the Wolverines the win.
  
Utah Valley trailed all of game 3 and held a 16-12 lead in game four. IPFW then scored seven straight points to take a 19-16 lead. Borghetti led Utah Valley with 18 kills.

The Division I Independent volleyball championships conclude on Saturday at the McKay Center. Utah Valley State plays at 12:30 p.m. against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi and at 5 p.m. against Northern Colorado.
