Wolverines Come From Behind To Win

PORTLAND, Oregon - The Wolverines found themselves in a two game hole, but found a way to climb their way out and win the next three games to beat UC-Davis Thursday night in the opening match of the Nike Portland Pilot Invitational. After losing the first two games by scores of, 30-27 and 30-23, the Wolverines, according to head coach Sam Atoa, -finally found life in the third game.- UVSC took the final three games, 30-26, 30-26, and 15-12. -They just decided that they wanted to play,- said Atoa. -We were terrible; but we changed our approach, and started to play better.- With the win, the Wolverines improve to 4-2 and are on a mini two game winning streak. The Aggies fall to 1-8 on the year. Leading the come-from-behind charge was senior right side hitter, Deise Borghetti, who finished with a match-high 26 kills. Borghetti was assisted on the front line by freshman middle blocker, Jessica Endres, and senior outside hitter Alina Wallauer, who finished with 15 and 11 kills, respectively. Krystal Taylor also added seven kills. Five Wolverines finished in double-digit digs, they were: Anne Olsen (16), Borghetti (15), Wallauer (15), O'Neal (14), and Lacee Koelliker (12). Koelliker added a match-high 47 assists. -I actually pulled Lacee [Koelliker] in the second game, because she wasn't getting it done,- said Atoa. -She came back and ended up playing very well.- Three Aggies finished in double-figure kills. Rachel Keener notched 15 to lead the way, Kate Wilton had 13, and Jenny Pierce added 10. On the defensive side, libero Mary McClelland was busy and finished the match with an impressive 30 digs. -We were lucky to get a win tonight,- said Atoa. -UC-Davis definitely had chances to win.- -We need to build on this and come more prepared tomorrow.- The Wolverines find themselves in a similar situation as last weekend when they had to play a night game followed by a morning game on the next day in the BYU/Mizuno Classic. Atoa was frustrated with the way his team handled the situation last weekend, (losing to Oklahoma 3-1 in the morning match) and hopes they will be ready to play. -We need to come more prepared tomorrow. We learned last week what happens when you don't come prepared to play a morning game after a night game,- said Atoa. There are a couple things UVSC did before the UC-Davis match that it won't be doing again, according to Atoa. -We won't eat Chinese, we won't go to the mall, and we won't go to Nike Town.- Whatever the Wolverines do, they will find their way to Chiles Center on Friday morning to play in the early match against Cal Poly-SLO. First serve is schedule for 11:00 am in Portland and 12:00 pm (MST).
