Sept. 9, 2006

Box Score

OREM, Utah - Utah Valley State closed out IPFW in four games 30-25, 31-29, 25-30, 30-18 Saturday night in the final match of the LaQuinta Invitational. The Wolverines took second place in the tournament finishing 2-1.

"We had a great tournament, even with the loss," said head coach Sam Atoa. "It was good to see the girls respond in this match after losing to a good Oral Roberts team."

Camie Manwill and Lacee Koelliker were named to the All-Tournament team. Manwill had 64 kills, averaging 5.82 per game and Koelliker finished with 140 assists, averaging 12.73 in the tournament.

Game one was tight with neither team taking more than a three point lead until UV moved ahead 28-24. There were 14 ties and five lead changes in the set. Camie Manwill and Jessica Endres each tallied five kills in the game and Ashley Brown added four. A late 5-1 Wolverine run closed out the game 30-25.

The Mastadons took an early 9-5 lead in game two. They would extend that lead to 16-10 forcing a UV timeout. The Wolverines would battle back and tie the game at 25 forcing an IPFW intermission. After UV scored the next two points out of the break the Dons called another timeout. IPFW came back to tie the set at 29, but the Wolverines would close out the next two points with Manwill and Ledall consecutive kills for the win. Manwill had seven kills in the game.

Game three was much like game one through the first half as it was locked at 13-13. The Dons would move ahead at 16-14, but UV would come back to tie the set at 19. IPFW kept pushing forward and would take a 23-20 lead before Atoa called timeout. The Dons extended their lead to 27-22, and fended off a late UV run to take the game 30-25.

The Wolverines would take a 14-9 lead to open game four and force IPFW to take timeout at that point. UV would maintain the advantage and owned a 20-14 lead when the Dons wanted another break. The Wolverines used the break to their advantage going on a 10-4 run after the timeout to close out the game and the match 30-18.

Manwill had 23 kills and 20 digs in the match, Endres finished with 12 kills and Ashley Brown had nine.

The Wolverines travel to San Jose, California to compete in the Hyatt Invitational next weekend. UV plays host team SJSU at 8:00 pm (MST) on Friday, Sept. 15, and Cal State Northridge (2:00 pm MST) and Harvard (5:00 pm MST) on Saturday.
