Orem, UT- The Utah Valley State softball team split a doubleheader with Idaho State on Saturday, winning game 1, 13-5 in six innings and losing game 2, 11-8. With wind gusts up to 30 miles-an-hour, the two teams combined to hit 14 homeruns in the two games.

"With this kind of wind I expected games in the high teens," Utah Valley State coach Todd Fairbourne said on the weather. "I don't think I have ever had a more miserable day for softball in my life."

Jackie Roberts earned her 11th win of the season in the first game by striking out five and scattering seven hits in six innings of work. Roberts also went 2-for-2 from the plate with a single and a three-run homerun.

"Jackie threw a good game, all things considered," Fairbourne said.

Cheryl McGraw led the Wolverines from the plate by going 4-for-6 with five RBI. McGraw, Roberts, Sara Roskelley, Jamie Tonis, Natalie Paulsen and Heidi Boyer hit homeruns in the two games.

In the first game, UV jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning after a two-RBI double by Tonis. McGraw then upped the lead to 3-0 in the third when she doubled to right field, scoring Cari Hamilton.

Roberts gave Utah Valley a 6-1 lead in the fourth with her three-run homerun. ISU countered with four runs in the top of the fifth but Roskelley smacked a two-run homer to extend the lead to 8-5 in the bottom half of the inning.

Homeruns continued to be the story of the day as Paulsen hit a two-run bomb to make the score 10-5 in the sixth inning. After an RBI double by Jasmine Joyce and an RBI single by Hamilton, McGraw ended the game with a single to left field that scored Joyce.

The Wolverines fell behind 5-0 after the top of the second inning in the second game. They added a run in the bottom of the second on a Tonis homerun and in the third McGraw and Hamilton both scored on passed balls after they reached base on back-to-back walks.

Trailing 7-3 after the top of the fifth, UV took an 8-7 lead in the bottom half of the inning. Madi Bowen started the inning with a single to center field. After a Lauren Augino walk, Hamilton drilled an RBI single to center that scored Bowen. McGraw then it a three-run homer and Boyer followed with a solo-shot over the scoreboard in left-center to give Utah Valley the 8-7 lead.

Idaho State scored four runs in the final two innings to re-take the lead and earn the win.

Utah Valley concludes the 2007 season on Tuesday when they play host to BYU on Senior Day. It will be the final game for Roberts and Hamilton. First pitch is set for 4 p.m.
