OREM, Utah - Utah Valley's Jenni Clough and Longwood's Anne Whitmore have been named as the United Soccer Conference's Player and Goalie of the Week for games played last weekend. Clough, a junior from South Jordan, Utah, scored a goal in the 63rd minute of the Wolverines 1-1 draw against Southern Utah. The goal put UV ahead, 1-0 in the second half of the game. Clough's goal was her first of the season and 13th of her career, tying the career school record. The two points also brought her within four points of the all-time school record. "It is very fitting that Jenni won the award this week," UV head coach Brent Anderson said. "She has been huge for us throughout her career here. I'm glad she was able to score the record goal in the first game so she can build on it throughout the season." The goal came after a corner kick was deflected to her. After some nifty moves, Clough drove home the shot from 15 yards out for the unassisted goal. Whitmore, a senior from Charlottsville, Va., led the Lancers to a 1-1 record last weekend. Longwood was the only USC team to play two games. Whitmore, a fourth-year starter in front of the net, allowed just one goal in two matches during a 1-1 opening week for the Lancers. She registered her ninth career shutout against Radford, and currently ranks fourth all-time at Longwood. After her performance last week, Whitmore leads the USC in saves (14) and goals against average (0.50) while being the only goalkeeper in the league to record a shutout. The awards were nominated and voted upon by the USC's Sports Information Directors. The USC is a soccer-only conference comprised of Delaware State University, Howard University, Longwood University, NJIT, South Carolina State University and Utah Valley University. |
